THE STRIKER

Communist China is reportedly ready to confront the United State of America should the latter intervene in the territorial dispute of the west Philippine seas. This is relative to the coming decision of the Permanent Arbitrary Tribunal where the Philippines filed a petition. China felt the decision will be in favor of Manila and it will not recognize the same and instead will go on its claim for ownership of the seas in question. Some observers believe this conflict may involve military confrontation.

I hope it is only a rumor that Britain is now allied with China, the reason why it withdrew its membership with the European union. I was shocked to read a news item in the Internet on the matter. Britain has long been a friend and ally of the USA just like France and England and certainly I could hardly believe it will ever betray that beautiful relationship.

The war on drugs has imperiled the lives of many journalists around the country. Because of their publications and broadcasts of the groups of persons dealing in drugs and the subsequent actions of the police, some of them got death threats in the process. Among the cities where death threats were issued are Surigao City and neighboring places in Metro Manila. Various press clubs in the provinces have coordinated with the authorities for protection while shifting higher gear in their battle against the drug menace.

While I am in favor of the fight against the illegal drugs, I wish to remind the authorities that the number of people killed in action is alarming. I hope only the drug dealer/pushers who really resist arrest with the use of guns should be shot. I have doubts that all those who were shot dead were armed or drug dealers. We must make it sure that the victims are real drug guys and are using guns to fight the authorities.

We should be aware that summary killing or salvaging is unlawful unless the suspects are armed and actually fighting the police. In the first place death penalty is not part of our laws. Granting death penalty is within our statutes, only the court can order the killing of a convicted felon in the case of murder or murder with rape.

According to news reports, next on line in Duterte’s battle against drugs are the politicians who protect them. I assumed these people will also be in the target range of the police for liquidation. I hope Digong will execute the corrupt politicians too if we must clean society of nuisance citizens.

I urge everyone to pray for world peace. Tension between America and China is escalating on the issue of the disputed seas and unless peaceful settlement is arrived at, it may end up in actions of big guns – – God forbids. China is aggressive in accumulating the land involved in conflict with the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and others.

I am about to believe that Pres. Digong Duterte will succeed in his efforts to dismantle corruption in the government service. I am apprehensive though the matter will not be permanent and everything will get back to normal as soon as excitement and thrill settle down. Just the same I pray it will last forever.

I heard the town of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental is winning in its battle against the use of illegal drugs. My congratulations to the police and all involved in the fight. Move forward buddies and finish the enemies of the town. I urge the police in Balingasag and other places to begin fighting this menace of society.

Typhoon Nepartak is blowing hard in the Philippines at this moment and I just hope no serious damage to life and property are registered within the next 24 hours. This is the super typhoon that could wreck havoc more particularly in the areas of Luzon and Taiwan. I said earlier the era of typhoons is within us and we should not take it for granted to avoid heavy loses. BEN EMATA Bennex News Service
